There's something special about the offerings at Sushi Kamon. My love for japanese food and great positive reviews here on Yelp! led me here. Completely unassuming in a strip mall on the south side of 60 just east of 21, it's easy to miss. The interior is old-school sushi restaurant complete with Hakata dolls, origami mobile and a litter of beckoning cats behind the bar. The restaurant is narrow and the furniture is spartan. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. She waits tables and he prepares the sushi. As for the food, that's where it shines. Everything from the miso soup to the delicately vinegared sushi rice is just a notch above other local places. We tried a sashimi bowl, chirashi, and a unagi-ju donburi, barbecued eel box. Both were amazingly delicate and delicious. This is the kind of step up you generally pay a lot more for at higher end sushi restaurants. I also tried a spicy tuna roll which wasn't as spicy as the menu implied, but nevertheless had complex flavors and a delicious crunch. It's still a decent deal, but I'd say that prices reflect the higher quality. My only wish was that the pickled ginger and wasabi quality matched the rest of the meal. Our server was so sweet, it was a pleasure to eat here. I will definitely be back.

Shout out to the cute asian couple that owns this joint for giving me the fattest piece of scallop sushi I've ever seen. You the real mvp.

Saw that this place had 4.5 stars and decided to give it a try, I had high hope, which probably was a bad thing. However I was hesitant as there were only 23 reviews available. Ordered the Maki C, which includedd 1 tuna roll, 1 california roll and 1 shrimp tempura roll. It came with miso soup. ALl for $13. It was just bad. The tuna was BROWN, it had nearly gone bad. The rice was all flaking out and dry.The miso soup probably cost 5 cents to make, nothing great. california roll lacked flavor, shrimp tempura roll, let's just say it was one of the worst shrimp tempura roll i've had, very little shrimp in it. And it only had 5 pieces instead of 6. I was there at around 6pm and NO A SOUL was in the restaurant, when I first walked in I was asked if it was just by myself, well heck no I am not sitting down in this ghost place, it would have been incredibly awkward, I mean it was VERY small and quiet in there...Even the husband and wife werent talking, if the person working the register was the wife and the person making the sushi was the husband that is. The only reason this place is not 1 star is because the couple was fairly nice and the place for what it's worth, not fancy but tastefully and cutely decorated. I have fully given up on trying to find a good ethnic or foodie place in vernon hills/lincolnshire/buffalo grove/long grove/libertyville. If you want anything food at least venture out to schamburg or arlington heights/palatine.

Avg at best; which would explain why the dining room was virtually empty on Sat night. Actually we were the only diners, until an older couple showed up around 7:30. While the hostesses was pleasant, there was nothing about the food that stood out. My sashimi had a total of 7 tiny slices of fish. Rolls priced @ $13+ lacked any flavor, but at least were not covered with a gallon of sauce as several places starting doing. I have also eaten once when the space was occupied by the previous tenant. Again, appears not much has changed, but the menu seems a bit larger. Location is poor and sushi is uninspiring, don't see us coming back here.

Not a great experience. The waitress acted annoyed with my requests and did not acknowledge my request with any reply. I expect some courtesy and a reply when you speak to anyone whether they are a server, owner, manager, etc. no excuse for bad service. And the hamachi Kama was under cooked. I've never had it that way here in the states.

Slow service but quality rolls. I would recommend.

Been here once for dinner and once for lunch. I really like this place. There are a few options in the area for decent sushi but what can I say, I prefer the "hole-in-the-wall" type atmosphere. The older woman who served us twice was somewhat quiet, but very sweet. The specialty rolls and salad I had for dinner were excellent. Props to the sushi chef! I had the shrimp tempura bento for lunch, and tried to be sneaky and ask for a substitution on my roll (spicy tuna instead of california, both of which were listed with different bentos). The server did call me out by pointing to the "no substitutions" note, and that was fair. But she did ask the sushi chef and came back to tell me he would give me the spicy tuna. Everything seems very fresh and tasty. I definitely will come back!

Sushi Kamon .. on a cold night when I was craving a bit of hot Japanese Tea, Miso Soup .. and a bit of (Wild Caught, - of course, for me) Fish, as a post - work-out Pescatarian craving for this mostly Vegetarian. My Partner and I ordered what you can see, plus an order of Vegetable Fried Rice (they did not fry in soybean Oil, and did not include an Egg - per my special Nutritionista request). The Mexicana Roll included extra jalapeños (we're Latino, - and love the spicy!) - delicious! Miso soup, too! .. I've eaten Japanese and Sushi for years, and have been to more authentic, upscale, well appointed.- but honestly : for the price, convenience to my Libertyville house, and really delightful customer-service - I am pleased. And will be back. I'd like to expound on the little Lady who greets, serves (& chats) - she is the Proprietor. - 4 th owner of this 30+ year restaurant (for the last 1 - 2 years, only). I like her.- and how she seems to connect with people. My Parents were restaurateurs,- and I still like the small business personal connection. I wish her, and her business well. :-)

Awesome fresh sushi that looks as good as it tastes. The service is also wonderful! I highly recommend the Volcano roll, edema, spot stickers, and chicken teriyaki (my 7 yr old loved it)! The hours are a little different, but all the food is made fresh, so it takes time to prep and is well with the scheduling. ;)

What we ordered: chicken katsu, Meixcana roll & spicy tuna roll Total bill: $26.10 The good: The fish tasted fresh; it was very soft and melt in your mouth. All of the ingredients in the Mexicana roll were fresh and crispy (cilantro, jalapeño) and the rice was perfectly cooked - not too sticky or too dry. The sad: The miso soup was bland and bitter for my taste. The rice was cooked perfectly but wasn't flavored with the traditional sweet/sour flavor I'm used to from sushi rice. The salad dressing looked really unappetizing. The chicken katsu was thick, tough and also kind of bland. Overall, I was really disappointed in my experience. I might give it another try because it got such good reviews but I am unlikely to go back. The service was ok- we weren't greeted with the same enthusiasm that is described in the other reviews.

A truly refreshing and authentic style Japanese restaurant which reminded us of our time in Japan. They offer a traditional Japanese menu but if your tastes are more to the less traditional, modern type of sushi, they also offer modern specialty rolls that one would find in fusion type of restaurant. The sushi and sashimi portions were good size for the price. I also like that you can order sushi by individual pieces vs. having to buy an "order" of two or more pieces as one often finds at sushi restaurants. My sashimi was fresh and delicious. The tempura Udon was outstanding with authentic, delicate tempura batter on quality shrimp and vegetables. The service was friendly and very attentive. Our server went out of her way to ensure that we had the best dining experience but we never felt rushed or that she was being intrusive. I had some dietary restrictions which limited my meal until I explained and she was kind enough to provide a few options for me to enjoy. This was our second time at this restaurant and she remembered us immediately upon entering with a friendly, "Good evening, welcome back!" A little hidden gem among the many commercialized restaurants in Vernon Hills.

Great sushi, great customer service. Their nigiri is great, and highly recommend the red carpet roll. It was a cold snowy night and they gave us complimentary miso, good miso as well. Small cozy place inside, but clean and good atmosphere. I would recommend this place over most other sushi places in the area after my first visit.

We were very excited to see that what was my favorite sushi restaurant when I lived in Buffalo Grove had opened 5 minutes away from where I live now! Exceeds expectations and blows the area's competition away. My husband's fave is their bento box and mine is their melt in your mouth sashimi...friendly, intimate family owned..I took a friend who was in from NYC and she told me that she hadn't found anything to compare.
(5)Jeanne H.
I didn't believe there was really good sushi outside of Chicago, but Sushi Kamon changed my mind! Quaint and clean (intimate, small, but still very clean and fresh interior), this was hands down the best sushi I've had in years. The owner was available and helpful about different dishes, and the sushi chefs were speedy. We had the kamon roll, soft shell crab roll, and rainbow dragon roll - I especially like avocado on a roll. It's farther for me to get there, but I'll be back. Looking forward to trying more dishes!
(5)Kimberly L.
Cute mom & pop restaurant. The owners are very nice. Husband ordered a Rainbow Dragon Roll (which looked amazing) and a crispy Spicy Tuna Roll. I don't eat raw fish so I didn't try it but husband said it was good. I got a Teriyaki beef combination bento box (~17). It came with a lot of food. I was quite full after the salad, miso soup, and bento box which comes with tempura & a california roll. I appreciated that the california roll didn't have an excessive amount of rice around it. The rice was moist and well made. Taking off a point because the beef was chewy and the teriyaki sauce was a little strange. There wasn't much beef as half of it was filled with veggies. The seaweed salad was also very little. Furthermore, $16 was quite expensive for a Dragon Roll. I would come back but I would skip the meat and go for the sushi. The sushi was the highlight of my bento box.
(4)Gwen K.
This is the most authentic, fresh sushi I have found in the area. After living in Japan and Hawaii, I know what good sushi tastes like. I would compare the quality and technique to sushi from higher-end sushi bars. The price is on point considering distance and product. I'm shocked that it's not packed every night even though I drive a little further down the road and find tons of people at fusion restaurants with crap sushi. They don't do gaming, they don't have Thai or Chinese or Vietnamese or even ramen. They have sushi. Perfect, amazingly delicious sushi! I recommend the volcano roll and spicy tuna.
(5)Ashley S.
This is THE BEST sushi spot in chicago! Coming from LA where you can find great sushi everywhere I have been looking and looking for a place that matches if not tops something like what I had there. This place is just as good if not better! Really inexpensive for the good quality! The chef(Steven) is awesome and the lady who works there was very very nice ! It's a great little sushi restaurant. We r so so happy we live so close and can't believe we just discovered it!! Highly highly recommend:)

I try to keep away from the suburbs, but I happened upon this gem early on a Thursday afternoon, when I was out there for work. Cozy, cute little place. The sushi is good, though nothing special. The woman who served us (seemed like the mom of what looked like a mom & pop shop?) was as sweet as can be, and even offered some tasty green tea ice cream with chocolate sauce--AFTER we paid the bill (i.e., for free). It was a tasty finish to a tasty meal.
(4)Nick B.
Nondescript, unassuming, and out of this world! Volcano roll was excellent. Great miso soup. Will definitely be back here to order the "Des Plaines River Special." I gave four stars instead of five because of a lack of alcoholic beverages. Would've loved some sake with my sushi!
(4)Tessa S.
Just fantastic. Very, very friendly - total mom and pop feel. The shrimp dumplings were divine! Sushi was excellent! And a teeny bowl of green tea ice cream accompanied the bill. Love it, I will be back!
(5)Jade J.
Food was good, nothing extra special, but it definitely wasn't bad my any means. The people who work there are the most friendliest people! A lot of people came in to get sushi to go and they seemed like regulars.
(4)Jiaxi L.
This is the first time I came here. The sushi is delicious and looks cute. The Udon is amazing. Service is very good.
(5)Carlo D.
Great sushi and great service is what you get here! My wife and I had kamon roll, spider, spicy salmon, and the Mexicana roll. They were awesome! If you like Mexican food, gotta try the Mexicana yellow tail, jalapeño, and cilantro. We were greeted by Sayaka, the owner, very sweet woman. She is very personable and friendly and we enjoyed meeting her. We will come back here again.

What a hidden gem in Vernon Hills! I would've never thought to have stopped by but my boyfriend really wanted to give it a try. It's a modest establishment but you are immediately welcomed by a sweet woman. The sushi was very delicious and fresh! (I'm used to only finding that in the city!) We ordered simple rolls like salmon avocado, Alaskan crispy, super white tuna + green onions, and sushi combo c. She was very attentive to our needs and brought us complimentary hot green tea (the authentic kind, not a tea bag) and edamame! As tables started filling up, you could tell that she takes the time to know her customers which is always a bonus in my book. Bottom line, if you want good, fresh sushi and want to feel welcomed as a first time guest or a weekly visitor, stop by! I only wish they were opened on Sundays!
(5)AJ O.
Great place for fresh, tastey sushi! Prices are very reasonable for the quality of product! Best part, the owner/waitress is very friendly and treated us like we were family and even took the time to learn our names and to make sure we had hers as well! We have been here twice now, and can foresee us being repeat customers. We have been to Sushi Kushi, Sushi Joon and a couple others and would rank this place #1 by FAR! If you are in the area looking for a great meal, go here! EDIT: Since I posted this they got a new sushi chef...Sushi Steve is a great asset and a cool dude. So sit at the sushi bar and enjoy the show!

My family and I have been customers of Sushi Kamon from day one and keep coming here because of great food and the personal touch of Sayaka, the owner of the restaurant. Today, we invited our friends from Chicago, big sushi connoisseurs from downtown Chicago and they greatly appreciated the quality of sushi and said that it was quite worth the drive.
